Industralization, Immigration, and Urban America
Economic
During the late 1800s some great inventions were made in America. Some of those people were Alexander Graham Bell, and Thomas Edison. Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish- born inventor that created the telephone by accident when he was trying to make a telegram machine that could send two telegrams at a time. When he created the telephone he was in Massachusetts, in 1876. His first words while making a call were “Mr. Watson, come here, I want you.” (Clayton). He also created AT & T a phone company. These inventions forever changed the business and communications. Another great inventor was Thomas Edison. He created the light bulb in 1879. He also created the phonograph in August 12, 1877.The phonograph was a sound ("Thomas Edison and His First Phonograph."). He was also a businessman, he created General Electrics or GE.
Social
During the development of big cities, people realized that they needed a faster way to get to places, and a lot more space for people
to live in cities. The subway for example was first build in Boston, Massachusettsin 1895-1897 it was 1.5 miles long. The subways were a great invention because it transported people at a faster pace. Another great invention was trains October 7, 1826, at Quincy, the first railroad in Americawas opened, by young engineer by the name of Gridley Bryant. The skyscrapers were another huge invention. In Chicagothere was a fire that burned all the buildings that were made of bricks. Then during the Industrial Revolution, engineers began experimenting with two new
materials iron and steel. The 10-story Home Insurance Building in Chicago was the first tall building to be supported by a steel skeleton of vertical columns and horizontal beams. (WGBH.). The structure being made out steel made buildings stronger and taller, and they were easier to build. The skyscrapers also allowed more people to live in cities.

Political
During the late 1800s to early 1900s a lot of people were traveling or mifrating to the United States. People that came to the Unites States had to stop at Ellis Island in New Yorkor Angel Islandin California. These people came from Europe (Ireland, England, France, est.) and Asia (China, and Japan). The Literacy Test of 1917 was a test that all immigrants had to pass in order to be able to live in the Unites States. This test tested people to know English and to know how to write it. Those who were over the age of 16 and could read some language must read 30 to
40 words to show their capability of reading (Tucker, Davis). Those who were sick or not good, normal people were not allowed to come in to the United Statesand they were obligated to return to their country of origin.

Political Cartoon
This political wartoon explains well what was immigration diring the late 1800s- early 1900s. All the people who traveled across the Atlantic Oceas and came to the Unites States had to go, and pass a Literary Test which started in 1917. You can see Uncle Sam holding the test on his hands, and a few people pass and are able to live in America.

How does these events lead to progress? Why?
The inventions of the light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879 was huge, it lead to everybody having electricity at their houses, and nobody
used candles anymore. People could see everything that is in their houses, some people even redecorated their houses because now that people could see everything, it needed to look nice. The telephone was also big on progress. Thanks to the telephone, At & T was created, and it is still a strong company now a days. The development of subways was huge in progress because now people could get to work/ places they needed to be at, faster. The skyscrapers were advanced, too, now they were build using steel, so they were able to make buildings higher. All of these things helped modernized America more. Politically the United States, I could say that there was a little bit of progress. The reason why I say this is because the Literary Test of 1917 was kind of mean to the people who were sick, or were not capable of progressing in America. But at the same time the Literary Test of 1917 let a lot of people out of America like alcoholics, and people who did drugs, or people who did not have a good
reputation in their country of origin. Also it let a lot of new people into America to have a better life than the one they had in their country of origin. The events lead to imperialism, the believe of controling other countries, cultural , millitary, and economically. The United States' goal was to spread their democracy to lesser countries. Millitary, it lead to the Spanish- American war, where America gained Guam, Puerto Rico, and the independance of the Philipines. Economically, America wanted to trade with Hawaii, because of the high demand of the sugar, which brought a lot of money to Hawaii.
